Hey Goat Cheese-

If that's the way you feel, stay away from Waddell. Kites are getting to be the rule there, and as far as I know, there have been no conflicts with kiters and sailors. Most kiters are sailors as well, and are well aware of the potential issues. Given the amount of area these things sweep out, it's pretty amazing that they've been able to sail in the waves there as much as they have and not have any issues, but that's just the way it is.

The local kiters are doing a lot of what the hot wavesailors have been doing over the years. Major down-the-line action, big air. The Scheibel bros and Jonah Lepac are doing some pretty amazing stuff. Obviously, this stuff shouldn't be limited to back bays or lakes and rivers.

-Ed (who doesn't kite)

The guy from Oz has got a point - especially if you're a beginner and f*&k up in the surf zone.

BUT, I did try kiting last weekend and wow, what a blast! I haven't decided to buy one just yet, but for light-air, it looks like a fun alternative. I'll approach it the same way I did wave sailing: stay away from the surf zone until you're ready for it (of course you'll push your limits). I'll be able to get out - even if I get worked a bit - without having the kite drop in the water.

Flying that thing was killer. The power the 8.5M kite was pulling me down the beach - and it was really easy to fly if you have any kiting background at all, it should be a no-brainer to fly one of these things.

We're gonna all have to get along - 'cause kiting is coming on strong in some venues - Wadell and C-St in Cali - I've seen lots of kiters in Miami too...they'll be anywhere there's lite air and warm water.....or jaded windsurfers.
