Interested in learning to shape and build boards. Any pointers for the beginner? Any good books/sources of info? Anyone in the bay area build their own boards?

Thanks,

- Ari

Hi Ari, Start here: http://www.surfingsports.com/ca_shape.asp http://www.surfingsports.com/ca_glass.asp These award winning videos are 90 minutes long by one of the best surfboard shapers in the world. Sample vid clips. These are geared towards a polyester board, which you should practice at before doing an epoxy. Less toxic also. They include tips and tricks that even experienced shapers have missed along the way. Just released and we have in stock: Airbrushing 101.

Also check out the section on CAD for design software.

A long-time member of our club builds his own stuff. For a quick article, see the link on our website (www.jawsjax.com) entitled, 'Board Building 101' by Scott Shine. I've seen his stuff, and it's great.

Try http://www.fiberglasssupply.com/, go to product catalog, then books & videos. I got the Maui boardbuilding and repair book, it's very informative. Might be dated shapewise and perhaps otherwise, but I wouldn't know.

Before you start building a whole board, try shaping a small scale model, just to see how time consuming and difficult it already is.
