I use oil based paint sticks for that and for harness line markings. Only problem is after awhile it has to be reapplied.
The mechanical u-joint solves that problem ... one reason I've used it since the mid-90s. That's probably the 'double-hinge' version you refer to.

No problem with a 9.8 (4-cam race). Sometimes it helps to swim to the tip to clear it out of the water and then 'walk' to the boom hand over hand.
