W-e-l-l-l-l...I went to Corpus allight.
I called Hans on a Tuesday night and he called me back the next morning and said a front was coming through Friday and Saturday looked good. Since I was already packed, I took a shower and got on the road in about an hour.
Somewhere around Little Rock, it dawned on me that I really wasn't excited about going to sail. I had this new P4 machine, Illustrator 10, Premiere 6, and some other things that I hadn't much played with since my old PIII bogged down under the load....and now I was on the way to sail, but my mind was really on learning new things. I realized, however, that if I did not go on to Bird, I would sit at home and kick myself for it. I should go down, sail a few days, and if the feeling persisted, I would come home and work.
The next afternoon, I called Roy from my car 100 miles out of CC and he said it would be dark by the time I got to Bird and I should come to his house for the night. I finally got to meet his lovely wife (it's always good to marry above yourself

, we had some pizza and worked on computers until 1 a.m.
I drove out to Bird the next morning, fully intending to set up camp, throw up my biggest sail, and sail all day. Sharon at the guard shack remembered me which really made me feel good as it has been two years since my last visit. I learned from her that Ron, the Italian from New England, had succumbed to leukemia last June. On the bright side, Fred, the official asshole of the park service, resigned last year.
I arrived at Bird and there was only one motpr home in sight, no tents, four sailors and not a sail in sight. It was blowing about 6. Worldwinds was not yet open. I decided I would to town and get a few things.
On the way out, it occurred to me that I really wanted to be at home working. I gave away quite a bit of work the past few weeks so I could take this trip and more people were wanting more things as I left town. I felt the urge to work and to learn much more than I wanted so hang out and wait for wind. So, I hit the road.
I gave myself the third degree on the way out of town, wondering if I had lost my mind, but the last time I did such a thing was when I quit my job at Black & Decker in '97. I drove to Cape Hatteras, spent about three hours, and then drove back home. I had just enough cash to last me three months and then I would have to go get another job I hated. Instead, I came back home and got to work and have never taken another job. This was the same kind of feeling - that there are opportunities here I have to take advantage of.
Since I got home I have been put on retainer as a Network Admin, picked up two web site jobs and a possible multimedia CD-ROM project. I think I made the right move.
