The kiting begins early and the heats are furious. Already, Damien LeRoy (Cabrinha) and Sky Solbach (North) are tied for first place with Shawn Richman (Waiman) closing in at 3rd place, after each having raced in 6 heats. The current standings can be found here.

From the young guns like Damien LeRoy and Shawn Richman…

…to the ranked ladies in the sport like Clarissa Hempel…

…to seasoned veterans of the sport and Bay Area pioneers like Chip Wasson…

…a good time is being had by all. The spirit of friendship and competition is everywhere, and with each competitor trying out new equipment, we’re still seeing a lot of tweaking resulting in lower than expected placings by some of the previous years’ champions. Chip Wasson, currently ranked a surprisingly low 17th place, actually missed one of his races due to equipment changes he had to make. Fortunately, San Francisco weather and winds have participated to provide excellent conditions. In one of the late races today, several competitors, including Damien LeRoy, were racing on 7m kites. When you combine this with a 2 to 3 knot flood current, you can imagine that it’s really honking out there. Things should start getting interesting over the next couple of days as the jockeying for rankings gets more intense.
