One problem I encountered when I was trying kitesurfing yesterday was when I tried to walk out deeper into the lake, there was so much lift from the kite that I couldn't get out very far before I became to light to touch the bottom. Should I just start close to the shore and learn to hit upwind

Wait for a wind direction that will allow you to body drag away from shore to a safe distance.

And while you are drifting further and further from the beach, wait for a wind direction that will get you to the shore again.

Didn't they tell you NEVER to go kitesurfing with off-shore wind?

I think I've decided that I like a wind direction that's about 75% side and 25% on shore. That way it's easy to get out and back and if you're just learning you can get a good downwind run and just walk back up the shore.
