Hi Amanda,
Sorry, there is no 'best model' for a beginner, the best way, is to start with a school, and try some models.
I think that a beginner needs: A very simple and easy security system; A stable kite; A easy relaunch system (like the 5th element or Cabrinha Recon);
I start with a Takoon 2003, then I've sold it and bought a Cabrinha 2004 (12 m2). This Summer I bought a WIPIKA WIP 18m2 for light wind And a Cabarete kite 9m2 for 25+ knots wind. (very stable, fast, nice and resistant, it is my best buy with my nomad board) My (favourite) board is a Nomad 128 (it is a custom).
For someone like me 182 cm 80 kgs, I think the best choice to begin is a Cabrinha CO2 12m2 2005 or a DREAM3 12m2 from Fone if you use to go to places where wind are 16/22 knots.
And the takoon board 'the 163 cm red model from 2003' to begin is a must! But don't buy a new one because after 10 sessions you will need a smaller one.
Best regards, and good sessions,
